Nonso Okpala Biography

Nonso Okpala is the GMD/CEO of VFD Group Plc, a proprietary investment firm in Nigeria with interests in foreign exchange, debt investment, international remittance, real estate and payment businesses. Until recently, he was the CFO at Heirs Holdings, an African proprietary investment company. As the company’s CFO, he was charged with the design and implementation of Heirs Holdings’ financial strategy, and played a pivotal role in implementing the turnaround/establishment strategy of its investee companies.

He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

Born on December 12, 1978 in Uga, Anambra State, Nonso Okpala spent the early phase of his life there with his family before they relocated to Benin City, Edo State. He had his primary education in Benin City and went to Imo to attend the Merist Brothers Juniorate, Uturu, Ekigwe for his secondary school education.

He proceeded to bag his first degree in Marketing from the University of Nigeria, Enugu in 2003.

The 44-year-old Nonso Okpala began his career in 2004 with KPMG. KPMG is a globally renowned audit and business advisory firm. Here, he had the opportunity to work with Nigeria’s top tier banks and other financial institutions. At KPMG, he gained ample experience in audit, due diligence, internal control, business process design and redesign.

In 2007, Nonso joined BGL Plc’s corporate finance department where he had the opportunity to work on landmark transactions that required skill in such areas as corporate valuation, complex financial modeling and balance sheet restructuring.

Nonso Okpala started his career working with KPMG Professional Services, Lagos as Senior Auditor from 2004 till 2008. Working as an auditor with the firm required that he had to be a chartered accountant, so Nonso got his ICAN certification. He had a brief stint with United Bank for Africa (UBA) and then went to BGL Plc, where he served as Special Assistant to one of the Executive Directors. He also joined the corporate finance team of the investment company.

BGL is one of the foremost Investment banking companies in Africa, with its head office in Nigeria, offering first-class financial advisory, corporate finance and private banking/asset management services to an expanding clientele comprised of institutional, corporate, government and ultra-high net-worth clients.

In 2015, he moved to VFD Group as its pioneer CEO. VFD Group is a financial services proprietary investment company, spreading its investment wings into basically every sector within the financial services industry. Over the last six years, Okpala has led a team of diverse professionals to get the business off the ground, and the group now has interests in foreign exchange, debt investment, international remittance, real estate and payment businesses.

The V bank app, which was launched in March 2020 as a digital bank, has already acquired millions of users spread across Nigeria. 

A statement titled ‘VBank rolls out new Version 3.0 App to kick Off 2021’, said this was disclosed during a virtual event to unveil the new features of its app to promote ease of use for its customers.

It stated, “Launched March 25, 2021, the digital bank has onboarded more than 250,000 individuals and businesses on its mobile banking platform across Nigeria, and processed transactions worth billions.

“The all-digital platform is most accessed in cities including Lagos, Anambra, Port-Harcourt, Abuja and Asaba.”

It stated that the new app, Version 3.0, has features including card-less withdrawals, multiple funds transfers, recurring transactions, proximity payments, advance budgeting and intelligent airtime top-up.

The statement said, “The new VBankapp will help users securely access their accounts to automate recurring bills, manage multiple cards from different banks, send and receive funds using a unique QR code, track daily, weekly and monthly spends.”

Nonso Okpala’s VFD group has shares with renown PiggVest company and also a hotel called the Board Room, located in Lekki, Lagos.

In addition to the VFD Group Plc, Okpala is a board member of Dynasty Real Estate Ltd and Drelugs Ltd.
